Cooking With Ian – The Gatsby

One of my favorite recipes, yet another random discovery on some long-forgotten cooking blog, this South African steak masala sandwich will become one of your favorites as well. This is a recipe for which I recommend adjusting spices to taste. I generally go a little heavier on the cumin and coriander, but your palate may vary.

1lb steak, thin sliced

1 baguette

1/2lb thick cut French fries (steak fries are best)

1 large onion, thin sliced

1 tomato, sliced

Shredded lettuce

3 cloves minced garlic

2 tsp salt

2 tsp ginger powder

2 tsp cumin

2 tsp coriander

2 tsp curry powder

2 tsp crushed red pepper

tomato sauce 

cheddar cheese (optional)

Fry or bake your French fries until crispy. Frying is highly recommended and you should try that at least once. Combine all spices and rub into the steak–of course, marinating this overnight is even better but it’s still good cooked right off. Cook onion on stovetop until caramelized, then add your steak strips and cook to taste (by which I mean medium rare…)

Remove excess bread from baguette; you want to form a trench down the middle. Take your steak and onion and place in the baguette, add lettuce, tomato slices, and, of course, some of the delicious masala sauce you’ve created in the cooking process. Finally, put your fries in the baguette, then add cheese (if desired.) 

Slice in half and enjoy with someone. Or be a glutton.
