To be fare, co-opting an existing organization and wearing it as a skin suit while changing its mission and people has a long and storied tradition (especially on the left), so it’s easy to see why a person who has done that or would try to do that himself would assume that everyone else would try it (and for those in the audience, they’d believe it). And it is all too easy to believe lies about your enemies (confirmation bias). As a teacher, the amount of historical illiteracy and apathy I see, even among teachers, is staggering.
