    Would have received 5 stars had it dealt with the depredations of Islam being largely responsible for the destruction of the economic fabric, and the need to flee productive areas for higher ground.

  2. I’m always bemused when historian deride the Europeans for their dark ages without reference to the constant Moslem razzias. I find Henri Pirenne’s arguments that the Moslem invasions and pressure helped Europeans define themselves quite cogent
    It’s also very hard to preserve civilization when the Moslems literally blockaded the Europeans from the rest of the world for the first 3 centuries of Islam’s existence

    • Yeah, Pirenne has a good insight into this issue. I have read his stuff, and I believe I even posted a book review on his book on this site last year.
